The importance of sleep

Sleep is essential for the growth and renewal of multiple physiological systems in the body and it is tightly controlled by the circadian rhythm. Your circadian rhythm is regulated by how long you’ve been awake and the changes between light and dark1. At night, your body responds to the loss of daylight by producing melatonin, a hormone that helps your body prepare for sleep.


Once asleep, we begin a series of ‘sleep cycles’ that occur throughout the night. Each cycle lasts 90-120 minutes, meaning someone sleeping for 8 hours in a night would experience 5 cycles. Each cycle is comprised of 3-4 ‘non-REM’ stages and ends with an REM stage (REM stands for Rapid Eye Movement.)

During the REM phases of sleep we experience during the night, skin regeneration and repair are at their greatest. In fact, did you know that:
